Preparing Your Body for Surgery or a Procedure
Preparing for a surgery or procedure may feel a little overwhelming at first; however, Diana Health is here to support you each step of the way. Our physicians underwent four years of training after medical school to become OB/GYNs. During this specialized training, they learned to perform high-tech surgeries. They have the technical expertise to offer surgeries ranging from robotic hysterectomies to endometrial ablations, hysteroscopies to colposcopies, and many other procedures central to optimal gynecologic care. They do regular continuing education to stay up-to-date on the latest advancements. When you schedule your surgery or procedure with one of our providers, you should feel confident that you will receive care from someone who has the technical expertise to do the procedure, and who also cares about your overall health and wellbeing, which is central to our mission at Diana Health.
One of the most important ways that you can care for your mental health prior to your procedure is to ask questions and be an informed patient. Write down your questions and bring them with you to your next visit with your doctor. Or, if you think of questions and don’t have a visit soon, you are welcome to message your Care Team via the Diana Health app or to call your local Diana Health practice. We want you to have answers. No question is too big or too small. We are here to help you and walk you through this process step-by-step.
Surgical procedures can be the perfect time for you to reflect on your overall health and consider changes that you may want to make both prior to the procedure and throughout your recovery process. Before your procedure, you might consider engaging in healthy lifestyle behaviors that support your well-being before as well as after your procedure.
Fuel Your Body With Food
Eat various high-quality, nutrient-dense foods to support your healing and recovery after your procedure. Focus on whole and minimally processed foods (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) rather than ultra-processed foods (candy, chips, and soda). Also, getting adequate fiber and hydration can help decrease constipation which is more common after surgery.
Stay Active as You Prepare
We don’t recommend that you start training for a marathon prior to your procedure; however, it is a good idea to stay physically active before surgery unless you’ve been given specific movement restrictions from your provider. Aerobic activity supports heart and lung health and muscular fitness, which is beneficial during the procedure and for your post-procedure recovery. Talk to your provider about other options for staying active if you haven’t been cleared for aerobic activity.
Reduce Procedure-Related Anxiety
Knowing that you have a procedure in the near future can be stressful. As you approach this important day, give yourself extra self-care time. Try pausing and taking a few deep breaths, spend time writing in a gratitude journal, or call a close friend. Remind yourself that you are not alone. You have your Diana Health team here by your side along this journey. Reach out to us with any questions or concerns.
Prioritize Restful Sleep
Sleep is especially important as you prepare for your procedure. Getting enough sleep before procedures may help with pain management and recovery following the surgery. Spend time engaging in relaxing activities before bed and try to follow a regular sleep and wake schedule. Also, dim the lights the hour before bed and avoid devices with screens, as these can interfere with the preparation for sleep too.
Connect with Someone Close to You
Talk to someone you are close to and can trust about how you feel as you prepare for your procedure. Perhaps this is someone you live with, or the person who will be driving you home following the procedure. Communicating your feelings can help you manage stress and strengthen your relationship. Consider discussing how this person can support you during your recovery period.
Although this blog focuses on preparation for surgery, the information is still valuable for post-procedure recovery too. With knowledge about the procedure, healthy lifestyle behaviors, and close communication with your Diana Health team, you’ll be prepared for this important moment in your health journey. If you would like more help on your wellness journey, Diana Health also has wellness coaching available.
